Career Fairs Continue To Be Successful

The winter Career Fair in the Restall Sports Center offered 122 registered companies for the 74 seniors seeking full-time employment and underclassmen looking for summer internships in their field.

Margaret “Weemie” Kingham, Career Fair organizer and placement director, said the fair was very successful and offered students many options in their career searches.

“All of the trades were well represented and all of the companies had positions they were seeking to fill with Williamson graduates,” she said. “The military was also well represented with reps from the Army, Air Force, and Coast Guard.

“The companies were excited to be there and it is obvious they are interested in hiring Williamson graduates. More and more companies are becoming aware of the excellent tradesmen we are producing and know they have the character traits that lead to success, such as diligence, responsibility, and a good work ethic.

“There are a large number of companies that come to each fair, but we also saw about 20 first-time companies. Word is spreading about the graduates we produce. And they come from across the country.”

As has become the trend, many alumni were there representing their companies. “It makes me happy to see so many alumni participating in the fairs because our students feel comfortable talking with them and they know they will get a straight answer to their questions. It also demonstrates to them that a Williamson education does lead to good employment.”

She added that even though about 70 percent of the seniors already have secured full-time employment, there were many there searching for just the right job.

“Many of our students learned that there are companies interested in hiring them regardless of the trade they are studying. They know Williamson graduates have a good foundation and can be taught new skills. There were just an abundance of opportunities.”

The fair lasted all morning and in the afternoon many companies made presentations to students who wanted more detail about opportunities.

Despite the large attendance, the fair went off without a hitch, with students helping with the setup and tear down and many employees helping in a variety of ways.

Kingham said it is beneficial so many staff and faculty visit the fair and interact with participating companies, including President Michael Rounds and Art Lallo 7W9, board vice chairman. She was especially grateful for the help of long-time volunteers Joyce Decker and Trish and Richard Sands and many members of the Office of Institutional Advancement. Members of Williamson’s Auxiliary were also there selling coffee and baked goods.
