The Clarence W. Schrenk Program in Horticulture, Landscaping, and Turf Management - Associate in Specialized Technology Degree
The goal of the
comprehensive training given in the Horticulture program is to prepare
students to enter the Horticulture Industry and to advance quickly into
management and supervisory positions. Through experience and support
courses, students will also be able to own and manage horticulture and
landscaping businesses of their own.
A strong curriculum of theoretical courses
is taught, covering topics that include:
Arboriculture, Herbaceous Ornamentals, Landscape Design and Construction, Botany, Woody Plant Identification, Plant Propagation, Turf Establishment and Maintenance, and Nursery Management.
Theoretical studies are reinforced by
substantial, practical lab time in which students are required to complete
many different campus installation, construction, and maintenance projects.
In order to accomplish goals as set forth in the project assignments,
the students utilize various hand tools, power equipment, specialized
machinery, and vehicles, including chain saws, leaf blowers, tampers,
skid-steer loaders, tractors, carts, and trucks.
The graduates of the program are well
prepared to enter the horticulture industry at entry-level supervisory/foreman
management positions and to work for a variety of employers, including
tree care companies, landscape design/build firms, grounds departments,
private estates, golf courses, public gardens, and arboreta.
