Longtime Assistant Joe Silvestri is New Wrestling Coach
Williamson is pleased to announce the hiring of longtime assistant coach Joe Silvestri to be its new wrestling coach. Silvestri replaces former coach Steve Harner who recently stepped down to take the head coaching position at Conestoga High School.
Silvestri is no stranger to Williamson. In fact, Williamson began its wrestling program in 1986 and at one time or another he was the assistant coach for each of the school's previous five head coaches.
"You could say I'm just a bit familiar with the school," joked Silvestri.
In addition to his work at Williamson, he also has been an assistant coach at various high schools in the area including Sun Valley and Cardinal O'Hara. He also is a certified high school and collegiate referee and is actively involved in wrestling organizations throughout the country.
"We simply felt that with his background, coaching experience and his knowledge of our student-athletes and of Williamson, there simply was not a better qualified candidate out there - period," explained Williamson's athletic director Dale Plummer. "We are thrilled Joe has agreed to become our next head coach. In our minds there is no better choice."
Silvestri inherits a program that won the NCWA Pennsylvania State Championship in 2008 and managed a school record 9th place finish at the NCWA National Championships. In addition the school had 2 wrestlers, Paul Capriolo at 125 lbs and Scott George at 141 lbs., earn All-American status. With 6 starters returning and several talented freshmen due to join the ranks, the future of the program looks bright.
"We're thankful to Steve for all he did over the past 3 years. He achieved a level of success like never before in school history but we feel confident that that success will continue right along now that Joe is on board," closed Plummer.
