Wing Nights in Full Swing for 2007-08

Since it began in 1998, Wing Night, the weekly event at Williamson has become the “hottest” event on campus.  Each Thursday an average of 200 students, staff, alumni, friends and family join together for buffalo wings, cheese steaks and fun. Each week a popular sporting event is displayed on the projection television screen.

Wing Night was started as a result of the Substance Abuse Council’s identified need to compete with the Thursday night bar scene. In recent years, Thursday has evolved into a popular night for “partying” among college-age young people. And so, for one night each week, Williamson’s dining room is transformed into a pub-like atmosphere -- minus the alcohol -- to complete with local bars on Thursday nights.

The most popular Wing Night each year is the Annual Wing Bowl held each December in which student participants compete for prizes as they try to consume as many wings as they can in 8 minutes. To participate in the Wing Bowl, each competitor arrives in costume and is joined by an entourage to perform a skit eliciting cheers and laughter from the audience which typically exceeds 300 guests. The event has grown so large that it has been moved from the Dining Hall to the Restall Sports Center Gym.

Tim Burbage, joined by a small group of alumni who call themselves, “The Monday Night Club,” created this event. The group was started by Williamson alumnus Steve Del Grande 9W2 who passed away earlier this year. Steve lost a long battle with cancer leaving behind his loving wife, Heather and three young sons.

Special thanks are extended to Tim Burbage and the Monday Night Club, as well as the dedicated volunteers who make this event happen each week and those who have donated cash and prizes to make this event a success. Wing Bowl VIII is scheduled for Thursday, December 13 at 8:30 p.m. You can check out the 2007-08 Wing Night schedule on this year’s School Calendar.
