What does it mean to give to The Williamson School? The Williamson Free School of Mechanical Trades exists because others gave. When Isaiah Williamson founded the School, his Trust provided for the establishment of the physical campus, as well as the coordination of the day to day operations of the School. However, the endowment established by Mr. Williamson in 1888, and the Trust subsequently established in 1957 by the Wanamaker family only supports about 65% of what it costs to operate the School on an annual basis. Without even factoring in capital improvements or any extensive maintenance, Williamson School would fail without the generosity of alumni, past parents, friends, corporation and foundations. Why do these groups choose to financially support the School? For Alumni, supporting The Williamson School is their way of giving back to the School that provided the foundation for their success as both professionals and citizens. Alumni underwrite the School making possible to same opportunities they had to future students. For Past Parents, a gift to The Williamson School recognizes their appreciation for the education and life that the School gave to their sons. For Friends, giving to Williamson demonstrates their partnership in perpetuating the School’s mission and vision. They see their giving as more than just upholding the future of a school, but maintaining a way of life. For Corporations, giving to The Williamson School ensures the future of the professions they serve, in many cases supporting the cultivation of future employees from among The Williamson School’s graduates. For Foundations and Community Organizations, supporting Williamson School provides an excellent trade and academic education to those who would not be able to afford it otherwise, while supporting the values and skills they see as components vital to an effective society. An important source of corporate philanthropy comes through Matching Gifts. More than 40 companies double or even triple gifts to Williamson each year. Williamson’s new Matching Gift Finder allows donors to check their company’s Matching Gift policy. Retirees and spouses are often eligible for gift matching as well.
