Quarterback Dale Blees passed for 140 yards and 2 touchdowns and the Williamson defense held one of the top rushing offenses in the nation on the NCAA Division III level to just over 200 yards rushing but it was not quite enough as the Mechanics fell to the Bison in their season opener.
Williamson led 7-0 at the end of the 1st quarter on a 21 yard pass from Blees to Lee Schofield. The pair then hooked up again for a TD combo-this time from 35 yards out. The Bison however blocked the extra point and returned it 75 yards for a 2-point conversion. The Bison used that momentum to go right down the field on a 7 play 6o yard drive to move to within 13-9. They then took their first lead of the game with only 32 seconds left in the half on a 30 yard TD pass from Jimmy Gardner to Ryan Worsham to lead 16-13 at half.
Gardner and Worsham then connected again on a 30 yard TD pass as the Bison moved to a 23-13 lead. They maintained that lead until 8:18 left in the game when Williamson put together a 7 play 53 yard drive in 2:53 to move to move to within 23-19. Three times the Mechanics defense would stop the Bison but all 3 times the Gallaudet defense would stop the Mechanics to preserve their 1st win of the year.
The entire Williamson defense played an incredible game. Gallaudet ranked 6th in NCAA III last year in rushing offense and rushed for 294 yards in their season opener last week while averaging 6 over yards per carry. Williamson held the Bison to just 218 net yards and only 4.2 yards per carry. They also held QB Jimmy Gardner to just 68 yards on only 3 completions. Preston Walker had a monster game with 12 tackles and a fumble recovery while Pat Doyle added 9 tackles, and Mike Lynch, John Taylor and Nick Jackson each had 5. [close] |

Last Second TD Overruled; Williamson Falls
A pass from Williamson’s Brandon Gutierrez to Jamie Justi that originally was ruled a touchdown as time expired was overruled and ruled an incomplete pass allowing Delaware Valley College hang on and come away with a 14-7 win over Williamson this afternoon. El Val’s JV moves to 2-0 while Williamson drops to 0-1.
After being outscored 96-39 the past 3 meetings with Delaware Valley College’s JV team, having not played a game yet and having just 38 players, no many people would have given Williamson a chance against the Aggies again this year. Del Val dominated last year’s match-up 28-0 in a game that wasn’t even that close. Yet for all those who came in as skeptics today’s game, many left believers that perhaps Williamson might just be much better than advertised.
In a defensive battle, Williamson held the Aggies to just 3 first downs in the first half. The bad news for the Mechanics was their offense had just 3 first downs as well.
Del Val got on the board first on a 48 yard TD run by Johnny Mahee. Williamson evened the score with 31 seconds left in the quarter when freshman Dan O’Hara (Cardinal O’Hara) scored on a 14 yard run.
The teams remained deadlocked until 10:30 left Kozell Jenkins scored on a 13 yard TD run. The teams traded possessions back and forth until the final 1:13 when Williamson took possession at their own 33 yard line with no timeouts left. A 36 yard pass to Jamie Justi, a personal foul and 2 more completions gave Williamson the ball at the Del Val 14 yard line with 11 seconds left. After an incomplete pass, quarterback Brendan Gutierrez scrambled and found Justi in the corner of the end zone for what originally was ruled a TD catch. A second official rushed over and overruled the call to say it was an incompletion-thus ending the game.
“I could not be more proud of our kids. They played their hearts out and went toe-to-toe with one of the finest JV programs around. We’re young and not deep but we showed today that no one has more heart.
Williamson’s defense played a stellar game and enabled the Mechanics to have a chance at the end. Junior LB Joe Cassidy (O’Hara) had 6 tackles, including 3 for loess and a sack. Senior defensive end Joe D’Aurizio (Strath Haven) had 5 tackles and 2 hurries . Preston Walker led the team with 8 tackles and also had a sack and a hurry.
“We face a tough Globe team next week up in Brooklyn but from what we all saw today-we’ll be ready,” closed Haines.

The Mechanics grabbed the early lead only to see Globe come back and grab a big lead at half. Undaunted, the Mechanics came out strong and made a run at the Knights before a pass intercepted at the Globe 2 yard line ended a drive that would have put Williamson within 6. A late TD by Globe sealed the game as Williamson fell to 0-2 on the year. [close] |

A banged up Mechanics squad hung tough for a while before running out of steam in a 36-0 loss to Thaddeus Stevens. After a scoreless 1st period, Stevens scored on a 58 yard pass play and then took advantage of a blocked punt to add another score. They then added one more prior to half to lead 20-0 at half. A 3rd quarter TD put things out of reach before Stevens added a meaningless TD and 2 point conversion with just 32 seconds left in the game.
Williamson falls to 0-3 on the year while Stevens moves to 3-2. [close] |

| The Mechanics used a 2-yard TD pass from Brandon Gutierrez and a 27-yard field goal by Andrew Abrams to take a 10-8 lead into halftime but couldn’t sustain the lead in the 2nd half. Khalaf Dow returned a blocked George Mason field goal attempt 86 yards for a touchdown only to see the TD nullified by a rarely seen defensive holding call. George Mason then connected on their 2nd attempt to take their 1st lead of the game in the 3rd quarter and used the momentum shift to take it from there. Dan O’Hara lead Williamson on offense with 71 yards rushing while Measha Salisbury pulled in a career high 4 passes. Defensively, Andrew Williamson, Khalaf Dow and Joe D’Aurizio all intercepted passes for the Mechanics who dropped to 0-4 and 0-1 on the year. [close] |

Snowstorm Aides Williamson
After losing their last 2 games by a combined score of 118-13 and having lost 17 in a row to Valley Forge Military College dating back, the Williamson football team needed s break heading into today’s game at Valley Forge. Little did they know that break would come in the form of a driving snowstorm would last the entire game. That combined with a stifling defensive effort helped Williamson to its first win of the season by a score of 27-6.
“You’ve heard of mudders? I think today we found out we are “snowers”, joked head coach Bill Haines.
We had nothing to lose so we told our kids go out and have fun.
Williamson used the snow to their advantage early as they scored 19 first quarter points. With nothing to lose, Haines was not afraid to throw the ball despite the snow and it paid off early as QB Brendan Gutierrez (Bonner) hit fellow Bonner grad Jamie Justi with a 10 yard strike to open the scoring.
It was then that Haines went into his bag of tricks. Facing a 3rd and 6 at the Valley Forge 43-yard line, he called for halfback option pass of which senior back Mike Baselice (O’Hara) hit Justi for a 43-yard TD pass.
Williamson added its 3rd first quarter score with 37 seconds left in the quarter as senior Sean Kidd took it in from 4 yards out.
Once staked to the 19-0 lead, Williamson’s defense did an incredible job as they held Valley Forge to a mere 73 yards of total offense for the game while intercepting 3 passes and recovering a fumble. The Trojans managed just 5 first downs the entire game.
The field entirely covered by snow before the game even started, it left Haines hoping for snow in the future.
“Rain is usually an equalizer. We found out today that snow can be an even greater one," remarked Haines. "No doubt our kids looked at it as an opportunity to have some fun and they used the field conditions to their advantage. It has been a long year so needless to say, I’m happy for them. And snapping a 17 game losing streak to them as well doesn’t hurt either!”

Senior Brendan Gutierrez passed for 2 TDs and ran for a 3rd but it was not enough as Widener’s JV team scored the game winning TD with just 22 seconds left to pull out the win.
Williamson used a safety and then TD passes of 18 yards to Sean Kidd and 21 yards to Jamie Justi to head into halftime up 16-6. The Mechanics then added a 33 yard field goal from Andrew Abrams before the Pride mounted their comeback culminating in the last second win. Offensively, freshman running back Dan O’Hara capped off a brilliant freshman year with 102 yards rushing. Defensively, senior Joe D’Aurizio finished out a stellar career with 7 tackles, including 1 for loss, 1 sack and a forced fumble. Fellow senior Preston Walker, a 2-time 1st team Seaboard Conference selection 4 tackles, 2 hurries, a pass break-up and a sack in his final collegiate game.
Williamson closed out the year with a 1-7 overall record while going 1-2 in the Seaboard Conference. [close] |
